Shiatsu | Hystory

Historical notes

The techniques from which Shiatsu probably developed (anma and do-in massage) are very ancient and originated in China.

Later they arrived in Japan and became so popular that anma massage was recognized by official medical authorities.
An evolutionary process through the various experiences of practitioners then led to the development of Shiatsu at the beginning of the last century.

Master Tokujiro Namikoshi is undoubtedly one of the creators.

In 1925, after having studied Anma and Western massage, Tokujiro Namikoshi founded the Shiatsu Institute in Hokkaido. This was the first step that led his school, the Japan Shiatsu College in Tokyo, to be officially recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 1964.

Shiatsu, over the last hundred years, has spread all over the world and especially in Europe, where it soon qualified as a complementary therapy, conquering a wide area of users.

Its evolution has been remarkable and has seen the birth of different styles.
